SUMMER SEMINAR IN ATLANTA

In June of 2024, TOLI will host an intensive, six-day conference for its Regional Seminar leaders and a new cohort of future leaders, all of whom are graduates of TOLI’s New York City Seminar. The program will be held in Atlanta, Georgia with a one-day field trip to Montgomery, Alabama.

The conference, “Celebrating the Past and Planning for the Future,” is designed to honor the work of Dr. Sondra Perl, who founded TOLI’s professional development model 18 years ago and who will be retiring at the conclusion of this seminar after a long and successful teaching career. The program will also provide opportunities for participants and faculty to discuss current trends and challenges in teaching the Holocaust and human rights as well as explore new models to expand TOLI’s reach.

While in Atlanta, the seminar will be held at both the Breman Museum of Jewish History and Culture and The Temple, an historic synagogue that was bombed during the 1950s for its support of civil rights. Additionally, the group will travel by bus to visit Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative sites: The Legacy Museum, the Monument to Peace and Justice, and the newly opened Freedom Monument Sculpture Park.

In looking forward to the conference, Dr. Perl reflected on TOLI’s programs: “What has always made TOLI unique,” she observed, “is its understanding that honoring individual voices and inquiry are the foundation of effective pedagogy. Keeping the act of writing at the center of TOLI programs is what will keep this spirit alive.” During their time together in Atlanta, participating educators will also engage in their own inquiry regarding the ways to deepen Perl’s meaningful legacy.
