Exploring Intersecting Legacies: The Holocaust, Antisemitism and Racism

Date: July 7-12, 2025

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

This seminar will explore the intersections of Holocaust education, racism, and antisemitism in Baltimore. Using the Holocaust as a touchstone, participants will engage with historic and modern urban issues such as the historical roots of antisemitism, scientific racism, housing segregation, educational inequality, racial violence, forms of community activism, and connecting local histories and Holocaust studies in the classroom.

  • Julia Berg

    Julia Berg is a National Board Certified educator with 14 years of experience teaching middle school social studies and English in Maryland. She has developed social studies curriculum for grades 3-7, led professional development workshops from the school level to the national level, and mentors aspiring educators in their student teaching experiences. She has recently become a published content writer for a new middle school world history textbook. Julia is also a passionate amateur archaeologist, working to promote shared ownership of our collective past and expand the historical discourse to include marginalized voices.

  • Katherine Arner

    Dr. Katherine Arner is an educator with 16 years of experience teaching history in the high school and college classroom. She has designed history curriculum for grades 9-12 and led cross-disciplinary professional development workshops for independent progressive school educators. In 2024, she was selected to participate in the Echoes and Reflections Advanced Seminar Journey through Poland. As a TOLI-trained educator, Dr. Arner is particularly passionate about getting students and educators to think about the connections between the Holocaust and social justice issues in their immediate worlds. At the Park School of Baltimore, she teaches The Holocaust: History and Memory, which culminates in an annual student-led community teach-in.
