Regional Seminars

One way teachers in TOLI’s programs bring the lessons of the Holocaust into the present moment is to link, as seminar leader Gail Desler says, “what happened ‘then and there’ to what is happening ‘here and now.”‘ Each of TOLI’s Regional Seminars will focus on social justice – its denial as part of genocidal policies and practices and its relevance today for teachers and students – as they face issues of intolerance in their own schools and communities. Sondra Perl, the Senior Program Director of The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI), is the featured guest of the Kurt and Tessye Simon Fund for Holocaust Remembrance Kristallnacht Commemoration. This Zoom program was introduced by Rabbi Karen Companez of Temple Beth-El in South Bend, Indiana and took place on Sunday, November 7, 2021. Perl's lecture describes her work with Austrian and American teachers and the way the two come together in her work at TOLI. In this video, Perl is joined by TOLI educators Ashley Libben and Sarah Wilson who will co-lead TOLI's satellite seminar in Ligonier, Indiana in the summer of 2022.

Teaching the Holocaust in Vilnius, Lithuania

In October, 2019 some 30 teachers from Lithuania took part in a Holocaust education in Lithuania organized by the Olga Lengel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights. In a country where 95 percent of its Jewish population was destroyed in the Holocaust and where there is a reluctance to confront the past, the seminar was was an important initiative. And much appreciated by teachers.
