Carly,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. As such, I have been looking for ways to foster the same in my classroom. I started using the Civil Conversation Guide (http://www.crf-usa.org/images/t2t/pdf/CivilConversationTeacherandDiscussionGuideRevised.pdf) from the Constitutional Rights Foundation in January. It helps them think about their…[Read more]

I finished reading the book some time ago, but have been struggling with what to say next.
In teaching World Geography to 7th graders, it is my hope to create/educate more well-rounded global citizens better able to participate in an increasingly global society. It is my hope that they develop empathy for and an understanding of people from…[Read more]

Of all the memoirs and books I’ve read about the Holocaust, I was struck by Olga Lengyel’s vivid portrayal of day-to-day life in Auschwitz in her book, Five Chimneys. The various roles she played while there afforded her insight which contributed greatly to her telling of the horror she and others lived/endured on a daily basis.
Like some of the…[Read more]

So, I have been trying to get the reading in amidst everything else going on in my life at present. I started the book in between matches at one of my daughter’s volleyball tournaments, something that rules our lives.
I teach Middle School Social Studies and I see it as my mission to produce well-informed, well-rounded global citizens who are…[Read more]

Greetings Maria,
I am really looking forward to meeting you. I began my career in archaeology and have a love for the past. I currently teach middle school (Ancient World History and World Geography). I have never been to Greece, but one of my favorite civilizations to teach is the Minoans.
Hope you have a safe journey to New York.
Best wishes,

Marisa,
That is weird! I teach at a small school and am the only 6th and 7th grade social studies teacher here. I would love to know what kinds of topics/activities your colleague covers.
Yes, the Lindgrens are Swedish though I don’t think they know how long their ancestors have been here. We’ve run into a few Lindgrens in our area, but…[Read more]

Hi Sherry,
I lived in Tulsa, OK for a number of years and went to high school not to far from you in Jenks, OK. In your work with children’s literature, have you come across a good (fiction or nonfiction) book for teaching Contemporary Antisemitism in middle school? I have been looking for one to possibly use in my class, but most books I find…[Read more]

Hello Shanedra,
I lived in Stillwater for a brief period of time in the late 90s. It was a fun town and I imagine it has expanded a lot since then. I enjoyed eating at Eskimo Joe’s and Hideaway Pizza while I was there. I never made it to a game as I tended to head out of town on those weekends, plus my loyalties were to the Golden Hurricanes.…[Read more]

Hi Heidi! I have two dogs as well. Both are rescue dogs with some complicated DNA. They do keep things interesting though. I like to hike as well, but haven’t really gotten out and explored as much as I would like. Perhaps that will change. My family took a trip out west when I was in High School and I think we may have gone through parts of…[Read more]

Greetings Amy!
I am extremely enthusiastic by the subjects that you teach in your school. I do love archeology and I believe that we are going to have plenty of subjects to talk about, when we meet each other in New York this Summer.
