Momodou,
I also resonated with much of the same. As a Writing Project teacher, I connected with the teachers teaching teachers model. I also connected strongly with Warren’s lessons on the importance of empathy. It is probably one of the most important things we can do in a classroom. -

Ashley,
I resonate with your discussion of your heritage. My mom is a first-generation American. My grandma and family came from Germany after WW2. I know very little of their life or our family’s history. Both books also pushed me to think about and question that unknown history. -

Alisha,
I thought this was one of the most interesting s graphic. I ELA I have seen/read. I loved the incorporation of primary source documents: letters, images, etc. it is a book that begs to be closely read. -

Jeremy,
I second what Ashley said. Your last line, for me, really speaks to the intent of Krug’s search. She seems to be searching for truth and identity, of learning and knowing who we are. -

Momodou,
Yes! We have to be authentically ourselves in the classroom, but we also need to learn who our students are and recognize their humanity. -

I resonated with multiple pieces in Becoming a Holocaust Educator. I connected with Brenda Johnston’s transformational journey with Montana Writing Project. MWP was where I found my people, other teachers motivated to push for student inquiry and the important role of writing in inquiry. My participation in MWP has led me to help establish a new…[Read more]

On page 180, Perl reflects on the impact of place on identity, “wondering whether there is a connection between terrain and the character of a people…wonder[ing], again, if the ecology of a land and the ethnicity of a people are in any way related.” Perl pushes the question of identity. How much does our place, its terrain and its history, shape…[Read more]

Momodou,
I agree that Kurt’s story is highly accessible. I keep thinking of the different ways people/students can and will connect with this. I think it has the potential to inspire others to tell their stories, as well as pushing us to think about how we tell our stories. -

I’ve had so many thoughts while reading Nora Krug’s book Belonging. The absolute power of heimat (and what a powerful concept of place, home, family, and belonging). The importance of knowing our histories and the difficulty in learning those histories. The juxtaposition of big and complicated issues with some of the elements of a graphic novel. I…[Read more]

Ashley,
I couldn’t agree more. It is imperative that we give students a space to learn and grow – to be critically thinking humans. This has also become increasingly risky in Montana as people continue to push for the censorship of teachers and curriculum. If we don’t make the space for this, though, who will? -

Momodou,
On this reading of On Austrian Soil, I connected very strongly with the selections from van Manen and the idea that we are not separate from the world. It is when we enter our classrooms with our humanity, ready to be active learners alongside our students that the magic happens. We need to be able to, as you say, “get our students to…[Read more] -

“Teaching and research are supposed to be intellectual acts. But it is hard to disagree: love of subjects, love of students, passion for learning, and reverence for life–isn’t this what makes a good teacher and, ultimately, a good human being?” (53)
As I re-read On Austrian Soil, I found myself tracking two related themes. 1) Classroom inquiry…[Read more]

Misty! My niece and nephew live in a small town in Montana…my nephew has 7 students in his class. Small schools have a lot of benefits. I am in a school with about 1700 students (about 400/class). I can’t wait to meet you and talk history, dogs, and books (I love historical fiction)!

Yes to all of this, but especially this: “So how do we participate in enacting this new vision for the world? Well, maybe it starts with reading and discussing and helping each other, but it can’t stop there. We must, as Love admonishes us, turn the intellectual into political resistance, into activism.
