Here is our present evaluation form. Sandy and I are applying for a grant to develop a more extensive instrument to measure shifts in teacher motivation and efficacy…if that comes through, we’ll have a new set of instruments that we will invite you to pilot.

Hi, Paula! Nice to “see” you again!
We are definitely gearing up for year two, and we already have 2 applicants! That’s a good sign. Our programming is also very solid. Our audience of teachers was very enthralled by Ghosts of Rwanda and follow up discussions with both Laura Lane and Carl Wilkins.

I don’t think Patel uses his identity politics experience cynically or superficially. Identity politics is quite complex and multi-layered. While we typically identify that movement with the Black Civil Rights […]

Corey,
Your mentioning The Path made me picture a labyrinth. There is that sensation I have while walking a labyrinth of going no where while reaching into everywhere. I think that’s what Eboo was doing as a […] -

The thing that stands out for me the most in the first few chapters, though subtle, is what it means to have to adjust and strategize as minorities move in and out of different contexts. “My energy was focused on […]

Peter,
I don’t think your questions are trivial at all. I think they are engaging and deep. Our language reflects our values and our knowledge and our willingness to be challenged, I think. Somewhere else, I […] -

I’m wondering if moral doctrine is the same as morality. I think we often confuse the two. Teaching a single moralistic point of view isn’t the same as being or acting moral. My own experience in the Catholic […]

I appreciate the honesty of your response, Colleen. There’s some interesting research on white female teachers and how they treat especially black boys differently, both in terms of efficacy and discipline. […]

This takes me back more than 20 years to my first summer taking high school students to Germany, the land of my […]

Peter,
I appreciate your willingness to put a potentially unpopular perspective out there. I will do that regularly, so expect some collar-scratching! I think your point is an exceptionally good one. When we […] -

I’m not surprised by lack of remorse. I think it’s very much a survival tactic. On smaller levels, we’ve all done it. Can we each think of a cruel thing we did when we were young that we have reframed so that […]

As an undergrad, I minored in religious studies and became obsessed with the psalms. I was going to be a psalm-scholar when I grew up! 🙂

Hi, everyone,
I teach in the School of Education at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD–a somewhat rural outpost where the scars of Jim Crow and segregation are still quite visible.
I began working with […]
