I so agree with you. Change is good (for the most part) as people keep changing and hopefully growing and enriching their lives and classes. This is why I look for opportunity to keep learning and to travel. I do not know how some teachers can teach the same subject, with the same materials, and the same way year after year. Change takes effort…[Read more]

In reply to: janet.blalock's profile was updated ViewHi Nicole, As far as I know I am not related to Ellen. Most of my husband’s family is from Texas. I like when historical nonfiction is used in classes. There are so many interesting books out there to read. I have my students pick a book to present to the class but they can cover all the genocides in the class. Can’t wait for NYC.

I really enjoyed this book though it was hard to read in places about what a person is willing and capable of doing to another person. I am wondering where the film is from them being filmed will sitting on the parade ground and listening to the orchestra. Propaganda at its best. I wonder if the film was clear enough to see how emancipated the…[Read more]

Parents experienced living through WWII and Nazi Germany. Propaganda was very prominent with government control over the news media. People believed in what they were told as they loved their country. If you have been taught a group of people are bad (I am worried about what people are learning about Islam) then you tend to believe it unless you…[Read more]

I also try to keep my personal opinions out of the discussions. I always tell my students there are at least two sides to every story / event. I can present information to sway them both ways but they need to decide for themselves what is right for them and then understand why they feel like they do. Yes, history has concrete events on dates and…[Read more]

I grew up in a small village in Alaska of 250-400 people. It was probably 95% white with only one Hispanic and one African-American family I can remember. As I started reading this book on page three “once again, I had my mother’s voice. No matter what they say or do, no matter how stunning their accomplishments in art, music, and philosophy,…[Read more]

I took my first Holocaust class in 2011 and then went on the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Summer Teacher program in 2012. I wrote a Holocaust and Genocide Studies class for my district which I have been teaching for three years now. I also teach AP World History, World History and Comparative World Religions. Next year I am suppose to do a…[Read more]

Hi Janet. I see that you live in Alaska, but I am curious if you are related to an Ellen Blalock? She is the coordinator of my father’s Holocaust Survivor Program in Rockville, Maryland. Seems like a pretty big coincidence if not : ). I will be seeing her in a few weeks for an event. Interested to hear about life in Alaska and the program you…[Read more]
