I like your journal ideas getting to know the kids and treating them as fellow travelers makes you as vulnerable as they.
Currently, my journal days have morphed into two journals- Mathematically Yours Reflection where I used journals to talk to my kids about math. Every few weeks I would pose a statement “This week I think I taught you how…[Read more]

I am at the part of the story where Sondra is beginning to reflect on her quest to find answers, Seems like she is self-reflecting and her world is turned inside out. I also see a plot within a plot as teachers use the framework of the story to reflect on their practice of teaching. As Christa shares her reflection on “The Tone of Teaching.”…[Read more]

I wrestle with that notion that Germans are savages because of the Holocaust. If Germans are savages, there might be a bit of savagery in every people. I think the true evil in the world is unbridled nationalism. We versus them always tends to dehumanize the “thems” of the world. Disturbing to me is Janet’s chance meeting of a “too short” SS…[Read more]

Thanks. I discover sharing my mistakes is a way to show I am human also. I try and keep the dialogue away from edgy. I also recognize I have a powerful influence over my students. I have taught my kiddos that there are really no purple singing dinosaurs in the world. But, I also am caught between what the community has a taste to hear.…[Read more]

I am reading the part of the book where Sondra is receiving letters from her students, and the exchange between them. With Gerd coming up. The story discusses crossing a line. I worry about crossing lines, partly because my need to space, and the nature in which we want to build a sense of community with our students, but I am not ready for…[Read more]

Hello fellow Summer Seminar Participant Friends
My Name is John Pattis. Originally an Army brat, I was born in California, but lived everywhere. As a little kid we lived in Kassel Germany in the mid-1950s. Then Athens Greece in the early 1960s. Like a tumble weed, many experiences. But I can’t remember the name of one single teacher until I…[Read more] -

Good afternoon.
I don’t have a computer at home (by design), so sneak into work after making the rounds of seeing grandkids, and working in the yard. It has taken a few tries to decode where we are to discuss “On Austrian Soil”. I guess the title gave it’s location away.Is this the place? Is this the format?
I remember going off to college…[Read more]

I too see the power of stories. This connects us as humans to one another. What I find is that my students see me as human, with failings, but still respond well to me. I find sharing my failures, without making myself uber vulnerable connects them to me, because they too have experienced some failure. The advantage of age is having a wealth…[Read more]

Thank you Dr. P
I am enthralled by the discovery you made during your walking tour of Innsbruck. The back alley street”that nobody uses” named for Franz Mair, someone who stood against group think. The way for a community to acknowledge bravery, without actually doing anything resembling being actually brave.
I know it is early, but while my…[Read more]

I’ve slowly learned that painting with a broad brush does not make for a great painting. As a kid growing up in eastern Idaho I remember some of the generalizations that were heavily tinted with bigotry about people that were different than us. At the time it was too easy to not be offended, than it was to take on…[Read more] -

When if the grief process occurs “Let it go?” Some of my friends are Vietnam vets, and have condemned any vet who returns to Vietnam as a tourist. Their argument is “the pain is just too real” I think each of us must unbox, face, and eventually conquer the demons that try to define us, but not make us better people. I just finished visiting…[Read more]
