People often ask me why I study the Holocaust. I usually tell them that teaching Night was the first time I had all students’ attention. It goes deeper than that, though. While I was reading Sondra’s text, I was stopped by her questioning her belief in addressing the Holocaust – “I once believed that the Holocaust had nothing to do with me. It…[Read more]

“I feel sometimes, like Margret, I can be so passionate that I can become impatient with my students’ apathy or with their struggles. I do not always leave room for their struggles.” I think we all feel like this sometimes. Teaching is a struggle in itself sometimes. I know that I often have to step back and try to see whatever lesson I am t…[Read more]

As I was reading this text, I realized more and more how much I want to be involved in the National Writing Project, but I am unsure how to become involved.

As I was reading this text, I kept thinking about my classroom and the students in it. I made many notes of parallels between what Sondra writes and the way I think. At the beginning of the text Sondra writes about “ways to make writing come alive so that each person’s voice counts” (Perl 5). I have always strived for that, but feel that I have…[Read more]

When Horst made his comments about WWI soldiers, I made a note in the margins. I had never thought about this before. I had to really think about his perspective. At first I was thinking about our soldiers – I am of course reading this on D-day – and I needed to think about the soldiers he was referring to. I too was also reminded about our…[Read more]

I am sorry that I am writing late – I just finished Thursday with school. In the past month, I have graded over 130 papers – over 60 of them research papers. I felt a little like I was drowning in a sea of high school writing.
1. While I haven’t finished the text, I have been busy with my highlighter and pencil. Right from the beginning, I…[Read more]

I love what you say about looking into sources. That is so important for students to do. I often struggle with getting them to look at the language – like you spoke about in your post.
Speaking to the original post, I remember a conversation I had with one of my coworkers prior to or right after the 2016 election. She was telling me about…[Read more]

Hello
I only took one course from her – can’t remember the name at the moment, but it dealt with other victims of the Holocaust like the Roma, etc. I really enjoyed her teaching style, and she really worked with me as I was going through a transitional period at the time. She is awesome!

Hello Oana!
I am so looking forward to meeting you. I was in Romania this past fall, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I had the opportunity to visit several Holocaust sites, along with other historical areas. I hope you enjoy visiting our country as much as I enjoyed visiting yours!

Hello Lacy
I graduated April 2017. I think we did have classes together. What was your favorite class? I am looking forward to TOLI this summer. I have heard nothing but positive feedback.

Hello to all – I am looking forward to meeting everyone.
My name is Katie, and I am a busy working mom of two teenage boys; 15 and 17. They are the light of my life – when they aren’t driving me crazy! I have an awesome husband, who doesn’t complain when I travel to far off places in search of knowledge and experience.
I teach in a rural, low-i…[Read more]
