I am preparing to depart for New York tomorrow morning, and thinking about the end of the book. I was so moved by the moment in the synagogue in Innsbruck on p.187. I have had experiences where I’ve stumbled into encountering just the words to speak into a moment like that, so I identified with that feeling of mystery. Am I finding these words…[Read more]

One of the things that has struck me about this book is that it provides such a good model for teacher reflection, which is something I have only experienced informally. I do not have an education degree, so I’ve learned about teaching and learning exclusively on the job. In many ways, I still feel very much like a novice in engaging questions of…[Read more]

Shanedra,
I’m late getting to reading these posts, so you have probably already uploaded your lesson plan for our course. Whether you shared a Holocaust lesson or a lesson on the Tulsa Race Riot for this part of our TOLI course, I’d love to visit with you about how you incorporate the local history of race relations into your work. That is…[Read more] -

Anne,
Your post resonates so much for me. I also teach very privileged kids who are generally oblivious to their privilege. We have very few African-American students, and many of my students would like to think of racism as something that happened somewhere else in another time, not something that continues to shape all of our lives in…[Read more] -

I am also an English teacher who until recently didn’t think of herself as a writer. (I’m also a terrible speller.) Interestingly I always found argumentative essays comfortable because the task was clearly defined, and I could execute it. As a teacher, I have felt more at ease teaching that kind of writing, too. In the last 3 years, poetry has…[Read more]

Audrey and Heidi,
The Devil’s Arithmetic is a beautiful, haunting middle grade novel. I highly recommend it, and I’m looking forward to learning about other book ideas from y’all.Lucy

Yes, Nathalie, we’ll have to trade tips! I’m mostly making up the work-life balance thing as I go along. I’m in awe of any parent raising twins – especially a single parent!

Carly,
I did hear that piece on This American Life! There was lots to ponder in it. It has made me think a lot about how I prepare my students for field trips, how my students are perceived when we go places, and how I read other kids out in the world, what biases I bring to that, etc. I look forward to discussing it in person this…[Read more] -

Hi Kathy,
What diverse and interesting experiences you bring to your teaching! Being a caretaker is such difficult work. I’m glad you’ll get some time away this summer. I look forward to learning from you and with you.Lucy

Hi Ellen,
Both my mother and my daughter are named Ellen, and I’m always excited to meet another Ellen! I’m interested to hear about all of your travels and language study. Those are things I haven’t done as much of as I would like. I hope to do more of both as my children get older.

Hello! My name is Lucy Adams, and I teach 6th and 7th grade English at TMI Episcopal School in San Antonio. The TMI stands for Texas Military Institute, not (as you might have guessed) Too Much Information. The school serves grades 6-12. It was historically a military school and still has a Junior ROTC program with about 25% of students…[Read more]
