Stephanie–
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I echo what Eileen and Sondra said before me.. your bravery is inspirational.
Also.. You are exactly right when you say “this means calling out micro aggressions in our class as well as with our colleagues and supervisors. It means pushing to end policies that create the school to prison…[Read more]

Ann- Thank you so much for sharing. When you say: “I am always transforming my silent voice to a voice that speaks and yells and fights more for my beliefs…exactly what I want from my students…” I feel SO similar. In my response I write about how I am only starting to find my voice now. I so appreciate everything you have shared and con…[Read more]

I am very lucky to have had an overall pleasant schooling experience. I loved going to school in my early elementary years– I would eagerly participate, always did my homework, and longed to please my teachers. Growing up my parents were very strict. They had high expectations for me, and I didn’t want to let them down. I am the oldest of three w…[Read more]

Sarah- I think you touch on a really important aspect of Sondra’s journey- that the experiences in Austria and with the teachers prompted her to think about what she needed to do next/beyond the trip. The idea that we are never done learning and that we always have a responsibility to act on behalf of justice is key! I also feel the same about…[Read more]

Bridgett- yes! I love what you mention about helping your students find their voices and learn how to use them. I think that’s something I am still trying to figure out even as an adult. I enjoyed reading about some of the teachers in Sondra’s class trying to find their voices, too… definitely relatable for me.
Love your profile picture by the…[Read more]

I think you make a great point when you say “students need to know how to have conversations about difficult topics. If we never allow them the chance to talk about these, students will not be prepared to go out in the world.”
I completely agree with that- I think the classroom should be a safe place for students to learn how to have these dif…[Read more]

I have really enjoyed the first five chapters in On Austrian Soil. As I read the text, I could picture myself sitting right alongside the teachers!
Some passages and topics that have stood out to me:
During Sondra’s second trip to Austria, the group looks at Researching Lived Experience by Max van Manen. They find van Manen’s comment “we can o…[Read more]

I can relate to you considering yourself a fully transplanted Southerner with a touch of Yankee perspective as I am also an upstate New Yorker now living in South Carolina. I am excited to hear about your experience teaching a course specifically focused on the Holocaust and Humans Rights Education. You’ve also prompted me to learn more about the…[Read more]

I have also noticed that my students seem most engaged when we talk/read about the Holocaust. I also agree that it is so important for us to continue to learn new things, too- I can only imagine how enriching it was to attend the Journey Through Poland! Looking forward to meeting you!
