Hi Kerri,
I just wanted to take a minute to express how brave what you’re doing in your teaching practices is! I really admire how you don’t let the pressure of being the only one doing something to better your students stop you from taking the necessary steps to achieve it! That’s hard, especially without the collaborative piece of your peers. -

It was a fight to get it adopted at our site, but it’s one of my students (and I’ll admit, my own) favorite novels that we read! -

Thanks Kristi!! I completely agree with you, especially in regards to the role that propaganda played in that silence! That was actually my top choice for area of focus for the Human Rights Inquiry! I’ve always been especially interested in how propaganda was aimed at the youth and younger levels (currently and historically) – which makes it that…[Read more]

“For most of my life I have been embarrassed to admit that I am Jewish. At thirteen, I learned to play down Judaism and to ignore anti-Semitic remarks. I learned, essentially, how to pass. Even worse, I secretly shared the world’s disdain…I did not want to be associated with a people so loud, so garish” (33-34). When I read that passage, it felt…[Read more]

The evolution of the role that Silence plays throughout this story (and I capitalize it here because, for me, Silence was just as real of a “character” as Margret or any of the others mentioned) was at the forefront of my thoughts as I read the text. I found the portrayal, and personification, of Silence to actively change within the var…[Read more]

Hello from Elk Grove, California!
I’m a seventh grade English teacher in my tenth year. Three years ago our site adopted The Book Thief as a core curriculum novel for our honors students; however, students at that age have not had a formal introduction to the Holocaust.I’ve spent the past three years working cross-circularly with our sit…[Read more]

I’ve used The Book Thief as a class read-aloud with my fifth graders. It is a great read.

It is still a fight. It helps that I am taller, and outweigh my boss. It also helps that I might be a tad cantankrous. I deftly keep them from hearing, or seeing anything that would cause the Harper Valley PTA to come looking for a fight.
Hahaha!! That’s an impressive skill set!
