I was drawn to the chapters in “Becoming a Holocaust Educator” that were written by teachers in rural districts, similar to mine. I had a brief, but victorious, battle with book censorship this school year. The administration supported my decision to include “Maus” in my Holocaust and Genocide Studies class, despite an objection from a very vocal…[Read more]

I have only walked around Ellis Island, never inside. I am very interested. Most of my family came to the United States before Ellis Island was built, but hopefully I can still learn some about my husband’s family, as well enhance my own general knowledge for teaching.

Hi Kelly – Yes, Sheryl was our director, along with Sarah Levy. They are the best. We still email each other regularly. I highly recommend the Advanced Learning Seminar. It was a life-changing trip. I will be glad to talk to you more about the course I teach. I’m looking forward to meeting you, too.

That’s so very interesting about traveling as “Canadian.” I definitely have tried to hide my “American” appearance at times in other countries, too, or at least blend in as best I can with the culture. I also read non-fiction almost exclusively.

It is an interesting exercise to think about both Perl’s and Krug’s stories. Both are deeply personal and emotional. Both tackle relationships and heritage and how personal histories have impacted present generations. I found both very interesting as they discuss candidly the modern-day experiences in Germany and Austria. Both had uncomfortable…[Read more]

I also noticed a similar design and thought of “Maus.” I have only read those two graphic novels, but both excite me to read more.

You make a very interesting connection to Native Americans. That is certainly true for all displaced groups in history. I would consider teaching the novel in class, too, or at least the concept of “heimat.” It could be a way for students to express their identities and sense of self or individuality in the classroom.

I have to admit that “Belonging” is only the second graphic novel I have read. We started reading “Maus” in my Holocaust and Genocide Studies class last year. I actually found it ironic that both books chronicle the story-gathering process and deal with multi-generational themes and challenges, albeit from very different places.
I have a real…[Read more]

I found myself bookmarking, for various reasons, several passages in “On Austrian Soil.” I am not Jewish and cannot relate to Sondra’s experience of visiting Austria in the same capacity. I don’t know what exactly has drawn me to study the Holocaust, but I am certainly moved by everything I learn. When I visited the camps in Germany and Poland in…[Read more]

Hi Sandy. The Holocaust and Genocide Education Network is the new name for the Ohio Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education. Our governor created a commission a few years with a very similar name, so we decided to rebrand ourselves. Love to talk to you more in NY about racing!

Hi Mary! I am very blessed to have had some wonderful opportunities. Traveling definitely inspires me. I am also very lucky to have had support from my admin and community to teach a stand-along Holocaust and Genocide Studies class. Looking forward to meeting you, too!

Hi Bridgett! After my parents “retired” a few years ago, they moved to a cabin outside Red Lodge, MT. They often talk about the changing weather. Apparently they had 4 feet of snow over a weekend recently! I am jealous of those of you who get to view the mountains every day.

Hi everyone. My name is Misty Ebinger. I am a social studies teacher at New London High School, in New London, Ohio. NLHS is a small public school that graduates about 65 students each year and is literally surrounded by cornfields (my students want me to explain that sometimes it’s soybeans). I have been teaching for 21 years and have taught a…[Read more]
