“Teachers teaching teachers”, a familiar motto to those of us affiliated with writitng projects at a university, college, or other location is what struck me browsing through this book. Michelle Pledger’s chaoter looked famiiar to me immedately, and it inspired me to adapt her strategies in our last Summer Holocaust Seminar to show the value of…[Read more]

Amen Bridgett. I share Wendy’s chapter with you and agrre that school and classroom community building are essential to fully “SEE” all students in our classrooms. I suspect most of the time as educators, we are focused on our students “doing school”, when infact they have other priorities outside the classroom. Undestnading who we are as well as…[Read more]

I totally agrre with you Leslie.I too paused to reread “Things German” a few times. I went through the book again yesterday, focused on Nora’s depictions of her memories. The symbolism in the pictures and photographs made me book amrk a few pages for further discussion. Her vivid recollections of the complicated structure of her “Heimat” I…[Read more]

Yes, Bridgett I like your title in response to Nora’s book. We all have stories, and it’s important to understand our jouneys from our lived experiences. This seems to be a theme in our work this Summer. “Who Am I” is a complicated questions and has contours that are sometimes difficult. Imagine if we took the time to ask the same questions of our…[Read more]

Pearl and Krug approach their searches for the truth about Germany and Germans during the Holocaust using different mediums. They have a shared German history trough their families. Both are in search of their identity. Through reading and writing activities with her students, Pearl is able to use exploratory prompts to understand contemporary…[Read more]

My first impression of Nora’s graphic format of her kourney is that it is accessible. Reading conventional text formats can be a barrier to great literature for many people including our students.
I immediately identified with Nora’s story, because I saw myself in it. I came to this country soon after I was released from prison, and I could not…[Read more] -

Thank you Heather. I think for a while, people associated Adichie’s expression to the African continent. I am glad you apply it in your practice at this level. I think it’s eqully applicable to ideas and concepts we teach in our classrooms.

Eileen, I am delighted that you apply UDLprinciples in your classroom.I am a practioner of the UDL principles as well, and have braided the principles with culturally responsive teaching practices. I suspect UDL is gaining strength in higher education and I hope you influence ithers in yur institution.

Ashley, You defintely capture the essence of Sondra’s work in this book. I think you have an even harder task where you are, but I can generalise that we are going to face similar channges in other states. It is increasingly becoming clear to me that the eduaction system will become front and center of the culture wars.

On Austrian Soil by Sondra Pearl: My first reading in 2021 was grounded in the social foundations of schooling, and specifically on the power of the curriculum. I focused on the hidden curriculum and how ideologies and propaganda are masked within it. We know both were explicit in Nazi curriculum I concluded then and now that classroom spaces are…[Read more]

Staci, What experiences you have had in your travels and work. I suspect you were in South Africa at the time of reclamations. Mary,
I suspect there are many students out there who feel ow you felt in those early years in Bozeman. I am guessing that this was a homogeneous setting, and perhaps teachers assumed that all was well with their students. Unlike you, I tended to keep every memorabilia in my childhood. To date, I find it difficult to discard any stuff.

Barb,
Skokie reminds me of the long drive from Urbana to bring my kids to visit grandma and grandpa. My kid’s mother comes from Skokie. Walking to school and picking up other children along the way is how I remember going to school. We too wore uniforms. The different dialects interwoven in our conversations gave away our ethnicities.

The coloniality of schooling in The Gambia was never in question. In fact the extent to which subjects of the British Empire in my country were coerced to surrender their identity and nationality was complete with the establishment of two missionary secondary schools in the country for over half a century. The Jesuits and the Methodist competed…[Read more]

Hi Staci, Finally got to reading your post and your work. I can identify with the multiplicities and complexities of daily living as a person of color/immigrant, but then I also think the advantage I/you bring to the table is the multiplicities of our identities/lenses. The growing number of educators who refuse to let HOPE be extinguished is…[Read more]
