In several places in the book – for instance on page 56 – differences between the Austrian and American approaches to teaching are discussed. For instance, Sondra Perl writes: “Models of teaching that promote the teacher primarily or exclusively as a transmitter of information do not provide rich, interactive contexts for learning. Such contexts…[Read more]

I was particularly moved by the chapter when Lengyel recounts the fate of the small children. She pays tribute to them by telling about some of their acts of bravery as reported by her fellow inmates and by describing the interactions she had with some of them, thereby giving a face and a voice to those who were the most silenced during the…[Read more]

Nathalie Segeral started the topic Publishing Holocaust Memoirs in the 1940s. in the forum Five Chimneys – 2018 Summer Seminar Responses – Optional 5 years, 10 months ago
In Europe in general, and more particularly in France, it was very hard for Holocaust survivors, especially women, to find a publisher in the wake of WWII. For instance, Charlotte Delbo waited until the 1960s to publish her memoir. I am curious to learn more about the US side of things – what kind of challenges Olga Lengyel had to go through to be…[Read more]

Nathalie Segeral started the topic Small Question Regarding Vocabulary. in the forum Five Chimneys – 2018 Summer Seminar Responses – Optional 5 years, 10 months ago
I started reading Five Chimneys two weeks ago and find myself surprised by the large number of French words used by Olga Lengyel – especially the word “accouchement”. I am wondering if it was the standard word used for deliveries or giving birth in the 1940s or if she uses that word because of her background.

Hi Marisa,

Also, I know is very hard to leave small children, even for a few days. I am a single mother of 2.5 year-old twins and have already had to leave them for several weeks due to conference and research travels that are crucial to my job as an assistant professor. I…[Read more]

Hi Amy,
I taught for a year at Virginia Tech before moving to Hawaii and will always cherish my memories from Virginia! I saw the most beautiful fall and spring colors while I was there and met such wonderful people!
I wasn’t aware that there was a Virginia Holocaust Museum – where is it? What kind of materials does it have?
Thank you!
Nathalie.
