Doug, that would be a wonderful world : ). and judging from the initial round of postings of our cohort, it seems that we will be making steps in that direction. Michael, that bel hooks quote is a keeper and I’m sure sharing that bullying experience with your students was not easy. But I’ll bet that by putting yourself out there like that, it took…[Read more]

1947. I had to keep checking the copyright date to be sure I was seeing it correctly. Olga Lengyel wrote this almost immediately after she was liberated. Talk about a purpose for writing! This amazing woman/nurse/resistance operative/survivor/author was driven to honor her husband, her boys, her parents, those she knew in the camp, and the…[Read more]

Hi Jim – I’m wondering if you had a similar reaction to being in Germany as Sondra did to being in Austria? It sounds like you have been many times now – so interesting that you are working directly with German students. I’m curious as to their reactions and writings about the Holocaust and how they differ from those your teach in Michigan. And of…[Read more]

I believe that being open and honest in the classroom makes you vulnerable- students and teachers alike. However, when my ninth graders volunteer to share their personal writings, those are my best teaching (and learning) days by far. As Andrea…[Read more]

However, when my ninth graders volunteer to share their personal writings, those are my best teaching (and learning) days by far. As Andrea wrote, our students often end up sharing their “deep personal agonies” and that we are left to grapple…[Read more]

In reply to: janet.blalock's profile was updated ViewHi Janet. I see that you live in Alaska, but I am curious if you are related to an Ellen Blalock? She is the coordinator of my father’s Holocaust Survivor Program in Rockville, Maryland. Seems like a pretty big coincidence if not : ). I will be seeing her in a few weeks for an event. Interested to hear about life in Alaska and the program you…[Read more]

Hi all! I am extremely excited and honored to be a part of this cohort. I cannot wait to meet, share with, and learn from all of you. I am a ninth-grade English teacher in my 6th year, coming from a career in corporate communications, with a little time in between to stay home with my two (then) little boys. At this point, there is nothing…[Read more]
