I don’t have much to add, but I enjoyed reading your ideas, especially the sentiment of “if we can’t forgive, we can’t move forward” and the reminder that sometimes we also have to forgive ourselves.

One of my favorite chapters in the book is “The Question of Forgiveness.” The opening of the chapter offers a variety of perspectives on Sondra’s meeting with Luis and Anna, and for my own reading, it establishes that this narrative told from Sondra’s view is still acted on by other forces. We don’t write or experience life in a vacuum, and while…[Read more]

Reading Sondra’s inner monologue and the dialogue with her students by letter in this section reminded me that being a teacher is a process. I appreciated Sondra walking us through her thought processes, including key decision points, moments of doubt, and responses to negative feedback, both for their importance in the overall narrative and for…[Read more]

I admit I haven’t read every thread, but I found myself thinking earlier today that I’m glad we were asked to read your book because it reveals parts of your life story that I otherwise might never learn. I appreciate your vulnerability and candor, including the courage it takes to read other people’s ideas and comments on this pivotal moment in…[Read more]

Michael, I agree with the ideas you expressed in your first paragraph. I think you named why I feel uncomfortable with my initial thought processes sometimes. I agree it is important for everyone to be able to self-identity and that regardless of affiliation, they are never dehumanized.
In regard to the second paragraph, that author’s statement…[Read more]

I thought about this too. My step-grandmother is Filipina, and I often find myself “guessing” when people I meet are Filipino/a, though I can’t say I feel totally comfortable with that thought process. If I try to rationalize it, I suppose it is that I see elements of my grandmother’s identity, whether her voice, her appearance, or other…[Read more]

I think my struggle with revealing where I stand on issues is the hardest to reconcile in issues of social justice. With many issues, I try to give weight to multiple angles of an issue, often being contrary if needed, but I struggle with what to say when students hold (often unsubstantiated) beliefs so contrary to my own about the things I really…[Read more]

This is probably coming from the emotional place where I am right now, but I tapped into the ideas of isolation vs. community in Kerri’s original post and in the text. I’m happy as well to have the chance to get to meet you all because we are connected already through this community, and I look forward to growing and changing through my…[Read more]

Greetings from South Carolina! I am currently finishing my seventh year teaching at a small, rural high school in the Upstate region of the state. If you are not familiar with this part of South Carolina, you may be picturing Palmetto trees and sandy beaches as I did when I moved here eleven years ago from the D.C. metro area, but our…[Read more]
