2025 Program Report
Our “Learning from the Past – Acting for the Future” seminar, held in Tbilisi, Georgia from August 4–8, 2025, was organized in partnership with the Education and Research Center.
The goal of this yearly seminar is to strengthen Holocaust and human rights education in Georgia by deepening teachers’ understanding of antisemitism, the Holocaust, the Roma genocide, and other injustices, while promoting democratic culture, intercultural education, and innovative teaching methods. The program balances historical knowledge with emotional engagement, reflection, and practical action planning.
This year, the program featured a range of expert-led sessions, including “Identity, Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination” with Oana Nestian-Sandu (TOLI); “Antisemitism Then and Now” with Oana Nestian-Sandu and Tena Banjeglav (TOLI); “Roma Genocide” with Raul Carstocea (Maynooth University); and “The Holocaust in Europe” with Martin Winstone (Holocaust Educational Trust).
Participants engaged with video testimony of Holocaust survivor Assia Raberman, explored “Representation of the Holocaust in Video Games” with Lorenz Prager (Zentrum Polis – Learning Politics in Schools), and examined the roles of “Upstanders, Bystanders, and Collaborators” with Tena Banjeglav. Other sessions included “Countering Holocaust Distortion” with Oana Nestian-Sandu and “Intercultural Education” with Natia Natsvlishvili (Education and Research Center).
The program also incorporated guided visits to Tbilisi’s synagogue and Jewish neighborhood, group reflection sessions, and the development of action plans for educational projects. It concluded with presentations on the TOLI Impact Grant Program and a final evaluation.
The Georgia seminar was organized with assistance from Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany) and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Finance.
