TOLI embarked on an exciting new project in 2020, and we encourage our educators from across the US and Europe to join us. The curated student art exhibit is in memory of Kathy Carlisle, a beloved TOLI teacher from Sacramento, California. Kathy was a high school art teacher, photographer, and painter who was dedicated to illuminating the lessons of the Holocaust through her art and the art of her students. Her powerful work is a testament to her artistry and love of teaching.
We invite all TOLI graduates of our seminars to submit photographs of their students’ artwork. The original art should reflect the student’s learning of the Holocaust itself or related concepts in context of the subject of the Holocaust, such as resilience. The original student-created art could be a painting, drawing, three-dimensional sculpture, textile, or work in any other artistic medium. Students may complete this art on their own or as part of a class. Students could use a book or film as an inspiration, or draw from the larger lessons they learned while studying the Holocaust. We encourage teachers to collaborate across disciplines.
We will begin accepting submissions in January 2025. We showcase the artwork to honor student voices and ideas, highlight the exceptional work of TOLI teachers, and honor Kathy’s memory.

A SUCCESSFUL RESCUE DURING WWII
These three drawings tell about Regina Zimet’s story. She was a German-Jewish child who ran away with her parents from Nazi Germany. In my drawings I told about the escape, the Italian shelter (thanks to a family from Sondrio) and, at last, the salvation.
