2025 Program Report

Our seminar in Budapest, Hungary, “Learning From the Past – Acting For the Future,” took place on July 1-5 at Central European University.

This program developed teachers’ critical understanding of antisemitism, the Holocaust, and other instances of social injustice; stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination at individual, group, and society levels; and Jewish life before and after the Holocaust. The seminar promoted innovative, student-centered teaching methods, including extracurricular activities and partnerships between schools and other institutions and organizations. It also encouraged an interdisciplinary approach to Holocaust, human rights, and intercultural education, and developed teachers’ competencies for democratic culture. Presentations, analyses, discussions, reflections, group work, videos, site visits, and guest speakers (including survivor testimony) were utilized to create a learner-centered experience.

Some highlights of the seminar included a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Center (Holokauszt Emlékközpont) in Budapest; an IWalk through the Jewish Quarter of Budapest; a discussion on “The Dangers of Holocaust Distortion” with former IHRA Secretary General (and new TOLI Board Member) Kathrin Meyer; a discussion on “The Female Perspective – Women and the Holocaust” with Central European University’s Andrea Peto; an IWalk and IWitness activity exploration of “Inspiring Women” with Zachor Alapítvány’s Monika Meszaros; a discussion of “Modern Antisemitism” with sociologist and professor Ildiko Barna; and a variety of Holocaust-related topics from TOLI’s Director of International Programs Oana Nestian-Sandu, TOLI Education & Partnerships Consultant Andrea Szonyi, and Hungarian historian László Csősz.

This program was developed in partnership with Zachor Foundation for Social Remembrance (Zachor Alapítvány), and took place with assistance from the Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany), supported by the German Federal Ministry of Finance.
