In the second half of the book I really enjoyed getting to be a fly on the wall in the correspondence between Margret and Sondra. While I am sure that Sondra is delightful and is obviously very compassionate and intelligent, I found Margret easier to relate to in many ways. In reflecting on this I think that it may be because Margret is dealing…[Read more]

PETER! You and I wrote on virtually the same idea/thinking from “On Austrian Soil!” (Of course you did so more eloquently than me!) I had forgotten about the quote about being a “whole human being” in our classrooms, but that directly speaks to what I was trying to get at in my post.
In the same class that I talked about in my post (this is not…[Read more]

I found the parallels that you drew between your experiences in Prague and Sondra’s in Austria to be very powerful and telling. It makes me think about the sections of “On Austrian Soil” when Sondra explains to her Austrian students that she can likely identify someone as Jewish based on their appearance and actions/body language. The Austrian…[Read more]

I have to confess that I have been feeling a bit guilty (which really isn’t unusual for me!) as I’ve been reading “On Austrian Soil,” as the parts that have struck me the most deal with education and what it means to be a teacher. However, as a teacher educator this makes sense as it is the focus of my current work.
I am really looking forward…[Read more]

Hi Ellen,
It seems like our paths have been criss crossing as I was born and raised in Colorado, got my doctorate at University of Minnesota (Go Gophers!) and now teach at University of North Dakota! 🙂 I look forward to getting to know you and learning more about your work at Fort Lewis (I won’t tell you the nickname we had for it growing up! :)).

Hi Gail,
One of my best friends from college lives in Birmingham and our group of friends from college is actually getting together in Birmingham the weekend before our TOLI adventure starts. Maybe we will cross paths in Birmingham! 🙂

Hi Andrew,
This must have been a big weekend for you with May the Fourth and the Derby! 🙂 Were you able to participate in any activities related to either event?

Hi Judy,
Your picture is lovely! I really look forward to talking books with you this summer! I also find that many of my students have an interest in the Holocaust as well and I am hoping this summer to learn how to harness some of that interest and to funnel it into other areas as well.

Hi Jen!
You have a great last name, although you seem to have an extra letter in there! 🙂 The Loudoun International Youth Leadership Summit sounds amazing; I can’t wait to learn more about it this summer!

Hi Everyone,
My name is Aimee Rogers and I am a bit late to this introduction party; does the fact that it is the end of the semester work as a viable excuse?! Please don’t take my tardiness as a lack of enthusiasm as I am very excited about this summer’s seminar and very much look forward to meeting and learning with all of you. By the way, is…[Read more]

Hi Aimee,
I just got home from traveling. Yes–criss-crossing. And… I know several nicknames for FLC, too, in fact, that’s all I heard about the place before I got here 14 years ago. I like to think I have helped the nicknames improve during my time here (but I have no evidence yet). See you in a few weeks! –Ellen
