Sonya,
I also underlined “Dedicated teachers are learners in their own classrooms” on page 56. At my school we often talk of the importance of being life-long learners. Students need to see that teachers do not know everything and that teachers are curious to find out answers and always learn more.

Dear Michelle,
The name for you, “mother-hen teacher”, is a wonderful compliment I believe. It is the ‘motherness’ and the ‘humanness’ in us that allows students to be comfortable enough to share their true thoughts and feelings. Those same qualities help us make the place of learning safe for students. My library workroom has peanut butter,…[Read more]

Hi Melissa,
Your description of the middle school years is true. I’ve found that middle school students, especially 8th graders for me, are drawn to the history of the Holocaust and are extremely interested in learning as much as they can.
It’s looks like quite a distance on the map, but have you ever visited the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee…[Read more]

Nadine,
I feel like I have met Margret Fessler by reading about her in Sondra’s book. How fortunate you are to have her as your principal. Your photo with your favorite book is so cute! Have you been to New York City in the past or will this be your first trip?

My copy of this book has many words, phrases and sentences underlined. I have sketched hearts beside passages I love and stars next to ideas I feel are important. There is so much in the book that speaks to me as a teacher and as a human. I find myself thinking often about the words “inheritors of hatred” and how hatred and prejudice is too often…[Read more]

Hi Tracei,
So many of the books you named are ones I love too. It will be nice to talk with you about books. Many, many years ago I lived in Biloxi, Mississippi and hope to go back one day with my dad (who is 81). See you in June!

Hello Jacqueline,
I will never forget your birthday because it is my husband’s birthday and it was my granddaddy’s birthday too. Lots of good people were born on June 19th! We will have to all celebrate with you.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing the link to the information about The Mitzvah Project. Doesn’t it seem that the more we learn about the Holocaust, the more there is to learn? Looking forward to meeting you and hearing more about your school.

For the past 22 years I have been a librarian in what has become one of the fastest growing school districts in Texas. We are just outside of Austin and our high school has 1800 students.
I was born in England on a U.S. Air Force base and lived on Air Force bases in the U.S. until junior high. I love spending time with family, seeing new places,…[Read more]
