Safely in. Safely out. Writing. Inquiry. Context and content. Know yourself and know your learners. Listen. Student voices. Empathy and ethics. Community. Action.
Gathering teacher voices is a kaleidoscope of perspectives, pedagogy, passions, strengths, and fears. The recognition of this by Jennifer and Scott allows us to find both pieces of our…[Read more]

Eduardo,
This: “…search for identity and understanding, viewed through the lens of their inherited pasts…” can be a challenge for many, but I do appreciate that these two women took us along on their journey. I/we have just completed facilitating our TOLI New Mexico Regional Seminar, and the complexities of learning about and one of the more…[Read more] -

Leslie,
oooooh…I love your last line and want to always exhibit this: “They listened. They considered. They reconsidered. They showed – and at times experienced – grace.”
And as in ‘Hamilton’ “Talk less. Smile more. Listen more.” -

Kelly,
I especially like what you stated here: both writers continue to pursue knowledge and answers to long held fears, beliefs, and possible misconceptions. They push themselves and others to confront, attempt to understand, take responsibility for a complex history that continues to perplex and inform us about humanity.”
This notion of…[Read more] -

What similarities and differences do you find in their memoirs?
The same, but different. While both Nora and Sondra had complicated and complex experiences facing their personal and families’ pasts, each had an original i…[Read more] -

Shame and guilt — pretty deep and difficult to shed. It makes me want to read/hear what Brene Brown might say….when I travelled in Germany, long before I understood much of anything about the Holocaust, I now know I must have asked uncomfortable questions to my host family and friends.

Mary,
I also felt like I could not write in this book, but I couldn’t jot down page numbers either, because there were none! I didn’t have post-its available where I did most of my reading, so I ended up with global impressions! Enjoy the vacation and the reading journey! -

What strikes you about Krug’s graphic memoir?
One of the first things that caught my attention was the style of creating the family “tree” – the use of mixed media of photos and sketches. I was inspired to work on making sense of our own family’s story of connection! As a whole, my students either love, or not, a graphic novel/text. But this bo…[Read more]

Bridgett,
Yes, the critical voices of teachers belong in research. This is the model I have used as a graduate student as well as a teacher. Having students design their own inquiry projects, out of a passion or commitment or deep question, can be empowering, as we saw from Christa’s growth. And….It is still a challenge to honor (qualitative)…[Read more] -

Jakub,
I connect with your words about being a good listener and facilitator who will not judge. It is a challenge in today’s world, in a polarized society. Thank you for putting words to this complicated idea.

Hello, Paul!
I am looking forward to meeting you! And I am very interested in reading your two books. Our teachers often use books and literature as a core of their Holocaust units.
I am originally from the Chicago area, and used to ride my bike along the lake through and around Northwestern’s campus; maybe we can talk pizza!
See you soon in June!
