Hi everyone!
I am also one of the original 2020 participants who has been waiting 3 long years to come to NYC! I’m very excited to finally meet all of you in person.
I co-facilitate the Maryland satellite seminar, and teach 6th grade world history in Salisbury, Maryland. Salisbury is on a small peninsula east of the Chesapeake Bay, just south of…[Read more]

Ashley,
I, like many others, relate so strongly to your post. I was (am?) also a perfectionist and my self-esteem was (is?) deeply tied to my academic success. I have also been working to untangle all of these complicated ideas in therapy. Brene Brown’s wonderful book, “The Gifts of Imperfection,” has helped me immensely on this journey. Thank…[Read more] -

My parents, like Love’s, also expected me to excel at school. I grew up a State Department/Foreign Service brat, so I was never at any school for more than 3 years. I attended mostly international schools in places like Berlin and Stockholm. I was always the new kid and often didn’t know the language. Despite the difficult initial adjustment…[Read more]

I must confess that it feels like no matter what I read, watch, or think about recently, my thoughts drift back to the Black Lives Matter movement and the racial inequality in the United States. This is where my heart has been for the last few months and I seem to be approaching everything through this lens now.
I see so many parallels between…[Read more]

Staci, your artistic interpretation is beautiful! I love how it captures the sentiment of Sondra’s quote. And I agree with you about the complexity of roles, and also about the value of discomfort in growth. Each of us brings our own stories, insecurities, traumas, fears, hopes, biases, passions, etc. to every situation and it can be difficult…[Read more]

In reading the first half of On Austrian Soil, I was most struck by the idea of vulnerability and being genuine with students: โItโs a risk, I know. But how better to emerge from behind the mask of professor than to reveal what moves inside me? How better to answer Andreaโs question about how to be a whole human being in the classroom?โ (12)

Eileen and Alexandra,
I also share the sentiment Eileen expressed about how precious it is to interact with people from other cultures. I’ve found that I learn the most about myself, and grow the most as a person, when I’m outside my comfort zone and interacting with people of very different backgrounds than my own. I often think of how much…[Read more]

Dear Mary,
I empathize with your struggles! Teachers are so often the most giving of people, and the time you are devoting to your own education, helping your mentee, and caring for your family and new puppy is only evidence of how devoted you are to your profession and your people. I’m also finding myself a bit overstretched this summer.

Hi Ashley!
I lived in Belgrade from 1986-1989. Not an ideal time to be there, and I was very young, but I have fond memories. I’d love to go back and visit!
Looking forward to meeting you as well!

Hi Eileen!
Oh, I love that we have so many things in common!
My sibling completed their undergraduate degree at Brown (graduated in 2010), studying psychology, so that’s one more thing we share ๐
Congratulations on your documentary! That sounds fascinating and now I have to check it out!
I’m so glad you and your family are together, safe, and well. -

Hi everyone. Iโm looking forward to meeting you all!
