Dear Sondra,
You had the guts to go to Mauthausen and then to retell your experiences. At the end of your book, you mention a sign you saw there that listed the ratio of inmates to guards at 15:1, then posed this: “What would have been the chances? Had they only realized – a useless thought, an impossible dream.”
You made me think about…[Read more]

Holly,
I have the sentence on page 146 that you quoted earmarked in my book as well. As I take my 8th graders through The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, I have the same fears and questions that you do. It’s impossible to adequately study Anne’s diary without creating a proper setting of her WWII world. How far do we go with these kids?…[Read more]

I agree with your thoughts, Carol. Gaining our students’ trust by our own transparency is our biggest challenge as educators in today’s world. Our students are distracted by so much “junk” in the world; I start every day with the hope that today is the day that somebody gets it, even if that “somebody” is me.
I’m so anxious to share.

Sondra,
Your experiences have ignited such a fire in my soul. I am so eager for our two weeks together studying. I’ve always been called a “geek,” which I used to despise; now I embrace and adore the term, for learning is my passion. Today before I left my classroom for the last day of the school year, my principal told me that a colleague had…[Read more]

This is one of the toughest books I’ve ever read. It took me a good while to get through it because of the horror described and the anger it evoked in my spirit – I had to put it down many times before I struggled to the end. Which brings me to the most emotional part of my journey through the words of Olga Lengyel . . . the pronoun “I.” What…[Read more]

Hi Kelley!
It will be nice to have a “neighbor” in NYC this summer – I live in Baton Rouge! I can totally relate to the statement you made about kids today feeling “entitled” and not seeing beyond their initial surroundings. I’m anxious to hear more about your school.
See you soon!

Holly,
I’m your neighbor here in Louisiana, but I also lived in ROBSTOWN, TX, as a little girl, attending Calallan (spelling?) Elementary School. My little brother was born in Robstown, as a matter of fact.
I’m anxious to meet you as we pave our way around NYC – this is going to be FABULOUS! -

April,
I will help you keep your balance while we are in NYC! My children are 28, 25, & 18 now, and I fondly remember the “shadow” days! We’ll pick out some wonderful surprises for her to celebrate your homecoming after this grand adventure!

Hello to you from Baton Rouge! I’m so happy that I’ll have a Southern girl with me in NYC. I’ve actually been to both Brandon and Flowood, Mississippi, believe it or not.
You’ll be interested to know that I MET BOTH Kwame Alexander and Jacqueline Woodson last year at a Young Adult Literature Conference at LSU. All I can say is WOW! The…[Read more] -

I am a junior high English teacher! It’s very exciting to prepare for this summer seminar, as I’ve been hoping to participate for a while now. NYC is my favorite place on earth; I’m a total glutton for travel and adventure. I hope to make lifelong friends this summer as we explore this very important topic and prepare to take home new ideas.…[Read more]
