Croatia
Date: October 31-November 4, 2024
Since 2022, TOLI has been organizing seminars in Croatia in partnership with Documenta – Centre for Dealing With the Past.
The objectives of the seminar are to:
- Develop teachers’ awareness of historical and current dialectical discussions concerning the Holocaust and other instances of social injustice;
- Develop teachers’ understanding of the impact of stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination at individual, group, and society levels;
- Develop teachers’ understanding of the Jewish life before and after the Holocaust;
- Develop teachers’ understanding of the Roma Genocide;
- Increase appreciation for innovative, student-centered teaching methods, including extra-curricular activities and partnerships between school and other institutions and organizations;
- Promote an interdisciplinary approach to Holocaust Education and Human Rights Education;
- Understand and counter Holocaust distortion
The program of the seminar is a combination of lectures and workshops by the experts in the fields. It also includes learning about Jewish history, life, traditions, and culture during a meeting with the Jewish community in Zagreb and a guided tour on the Holocaust and resistance. One day of the seminar is dedicated to the visit to the former concentration camp Jasenovac and Roma memorial in Uštica, where teachers learn more about the Holocaust, as well as how to work with students on the locations with such a difficult past. The participants also meet Holocaust survivor Darko Fisher, who shares his emotional testimony. Finally, the participants have the opportunity to be inspired by their colleagues who implemented the Impact-grant projects during the previous year and to create their own project ideas.

Impact Grants
Graduates of the seminar have the opportunity to apply for an impact grant to develop projects related to Holocaust education and social justice. The grant consists of financial support and continuous mentorship throughout the school year. Every year, about 10 educators from Croatia benefit from the TOLI Impact Grant Program.
