  • A. Two letters of recommendation

  • One from your department chair, principal or other appropriate administrator indicating support for your development as a teacher in Holocaust and Social Justice Education. (It might include references to teaching, programming, or other leadership you already do, or will develop, regarding these topics.)The second letter should come from an educator familiar with your work who can speak to your leadership skills, your ability to teach both students and adults, and your potential to create and sustain outreach efforts.
  • B. A personal statement

  • No longer than three pages, in which you describe the following:

    • The context in which you teach, and the issues, both large and small, that shape your students’ lives both inside and out of school. In other words, identify the area of critical need in your school, town, or community as you see it, that can be addressed by Holocaust & Social Justice Education.
    • Your own interest in the Holocaust and/or other genocides. Specifically, please address the following:
    o What draws you to this field? What is it about the subject that engages you personally?
    o A book, film, or other work that has been integral to your thinking about the Holocaust. Please discuss one text in depth, but if there are other books or films that are important to you, feel free to mention them.
    o Specific questions you may have or areas of interest you would like to pursue, and/or any area in which you have already developed some expertise related to Holocaust study.
    o What you hope to accomplish as a result of having attended the seminar. What are your goals for yourself and for Holocaust Education at your school? How might participation in this seminar help you to address the area of critical need identified above?

    We don’t expect you to be an expert in Holocaust scholarship or pedagogy prior to attending the seminar. However, we would like your personal statement to convey a sense of what it is that you hope to achieve; what knowledge, background, or perspective you will bring; and what it is that defines you as an educator. Knowing this about you will help us to select a varied and dynamic group of teacher consultants able to challenge, inform, and inspire one another through their unique viewpoints and knowledge base as we create a statewide network of Michigan teachers dedicated to Holocaust and Social Justice Education.

  • Participants will be offered housing during the seminar. Housing and meals for most of the program will be provided at The Hotel Farmington Hills, with catered lunches at the Holocaust Memorial Center.

    Hotel rooms will be double occupancy (single rooms with two double beds). If you are applying as part of a team, please identify the name of your preferred roommate.

    For teachers applying as individuals, rooms will be assigned to same-sex participants.
