Feld Trip to the Illinois Holocaust Memorial Museum and Education Center
recipients: Scott Lone, West Bend High School, West Bend, Wisconsin
date: Spring 2016

Students in Scott Lone’s US History classes spend three weeks studying the Holocaust, a curriculum which culminates in a meeting with a local Holocaust survivor. A mini-grant made it possible for Scott’s students to visit the Illinois Holocaust Memorial Museum and Education Center as well, the first event of its kind in his district.

Scott led a group of 74 students on the trip to the museum in Skokie, Illinois, where they toured the exhibits and had the privilege of meeting Vera Burstyn, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. Ms. Burstyn gave moving testimony and the students were deeply touched by her personalized presentation and openness to answering their many questions. After the museum tour, students completed several reflection and evaluation questions, which provided valuable feedback on the experience’s meaningful impact.
