Teaching About the Holocaust and Human Rights: Is Hope Possible?

Sondra Perl, the Senior Program Director of The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI), is the featured guest of the Kurt and Tessye Simon Fund for Holocaust Remembrance Kristallnacht Commemoration. This Zoom program was introduced by Rabbi Karen Companez of Temple Beth-El in South Bend, Indiana and took place on Sunday, November 7, 2021. Perl's lecture describes her work with Austrian and American teachers and the way the two come together in her work at TOLI. In this video, Perl is joined by TOLI educators Ashley Libben and Sarah Wilson who will co-lead TOLI's satellite seminar in Ligonier, Indiana in the summer of 2022.

Teaching with Memorials: A Visit to the Oregon Holocaust Memorial and the Japanese American Museum of Oregon

Experienced educator and co-leader of the TOLI Satellite Seminar in Oregon Rob Hadley guides viewers on a tour of two important historical sites and considers the importance of memorials and museums to teaching difficult histories. Guest speakers and experts provide further insight into how working with artifacts enhances student learning.

In this workshop Pam Bodnar and Gail Desler, co-leaders of the TOLI Satellite Seminar in California, lead viewers through the painful and complex history of the internment of Japanese Americans in the United States and address how educators can find thoughtful and sensitive ways to teach about this subject.

Teaching the Holocaust in Vilnius, Lithuania

In October, 2019 some 30 teachers from Lithuania took part in a Holocaust education in Lithuania organized by the Olga Lengel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights. In a country where 95 percent of its Jewish population was destroyed in the Holocaust and where there is a reluctance to confront the past, the seminar was was an important initiative. And much appreciated by teachers.
