Hello Lynn!
I am also from Wisconsin (Eagle River, quite a distance from Milwaukee!), and I also studied with the Lux Center. In 2013, I went with Richard Lux and Bonnie Shafrin (and others) to Israel to study at Yad Vashem. I’m excited to meet you!

Hi Kelly,
I agree with you that it is very important to teach compassion and forgiveness. Do your students who are dealing with the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement, the “new generation,” connect with the Jewish population of the Holocaust? If so, on what level? I am interested to know. I have a school with almost all rural Caucasian…[Read more]

After having finished reading On Austrian Soil, I realize just how important the teaching of Holocaust and self-reflection during this educational process is necessary. When Sondra asks for volunteers to read their reflections of the class, and the discussion turns towards the Austrian people’s history, the students really start to share their e…[Read more]

Hi Holly, Penny,
After reading these entries, I can totally understand. It will be good to discuss, and we can learn from each other. I wonder if there are any definitive answers about any of it. We will not be able to teach balance on this subject of the Holocaust because it is so unbalanced and makes so little actual sense to us. We can dissect…[Read more]

I am about halfway through reading On Austrian Soil, and I have multiple sections in the book highlighted and noted, and the most so far is in Chapter 5, where Sondra’s class tours Innsbruck with Horst Schreiber. Much is learned from Horst, even by the residents of the area, that opens their eyes. Here are two passages that stood out to…[Read more]

Hi Jacqueline!
By the sounds of it, you are very punny. 🙂 I look forward to meeting you, learning from you, and getting to know you better! I have not read Hana’s Suitcase, but I will try to read it before NYC so I can understand that teaching activity you mentioned. I’m excited!!

Can’t wait to meet all of you!
I grew up and currently live in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, very rural, rich with lakes and trees and nature. We get deer, wild turkeys, and bear in our yard (and yes, mosquitoes!). Eagle River, my hometown, is 30 miles from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — way north! My family consists of my husband,…[Read more]
