Good Morning! Recently North Carolina teachers also had a walkout; we’re a non-unionized state, so it was sporadically effective, but enough teachers applied for a personal day off that over 20 districts across the state closed for the day. As in your case, it taught us a lot about our politicians, communities, and schools.
I wonder if you know…[Read more]

I noticed “accouchement” as I read the book and thought it akin to the English “confinement”– that is, a “polite term” (as if one were needed!) for childbirth. And I thought it strange that Lengyel would employ such a euphemism in a book so full of horrors. Yet, when contrasted with the fates of these mothers and babies, it was all the more…[Read more]

Aimee, I empathize completely with the end-of-the-year rush. We finish on the 15th, and then of course comes New York. I keep thinking of new things I must take care of before I leave.
I hear you so clearly on the enthusiasm issue. I’m going to another Holocaust seminar in July and when I mentioned that to a friend recently, he said I’d be…[Read more]

Megan, your response really speaks to me. “Trust” is the key word in the student/teacher relationship. In my school, I know that I am for many of my students one of the small number of adults in their lives who are steady, predictable, sympathetic and supportive. I do my best to be present, punctual, prepared and proficient; and I expect the same…[Read more]

I have read that accounts of the genocide were downplayed immediately after the war, subsumed among the unspeakable millions of the dead. Then very quickly the Soviets were our enemies and non-Communist Germans our new friends, and there were plenty of political reasons for the suppression of memory.

As I read Sondra’s book, I kept coming back to my own visit to Austria in about 1989 or ’90. My wife Dee and I stayed in Vienna with a friend who was teaching at an American school nearby. He had a lovely apartment with a terrace and a beautiful view. When I remarked that it was amazing that he could afford such an apartment, he said that it was…[Read more]

Hello Anne, it’s nice to meet you! You’ll be having a homecoming of sorts in New York, won’t you? I’m from New Jersey, but because I grew up in the southern part of the state, I’m a bit overawed by the prospect of staying in the city itself for two weeks. It really sounds like your students benefit from your thoughtful curricular choices! I look…[Read more]

On page 7, Andrea wonders, “How can one be a whole human being in the classroom?”
Sondra seems startled that this question falls into silence. She hears her mother’s voice indicting them as the children of Nazis who would never think of considering the ethical implications of their classroom practice. Sondra rejects this inner voice, noting that…[Read more]

Hello, Hashim! I look forward to meeting you. I’ve also spent my adult life in a rural area after a childhood in a more bustling environment. It will be interesting to be in the noisy city, away from the crickets and the deer. I’d like to hear more about your Museum Teaching Fellow experience.

Sondra’s first trip to Austria was at least as much a personal as it was a geographical journey. Your reflection makes me think that your journey, and mine, and all of ours, will be similarly complex. The process of getting to Manhattan will present us with its own (ideally very minor) adventures, in your case with airport goodbyes from your…[Read more]

Hi Andrew,
I began my career teaching middle school, and I really enjoyed it! It takes a master teacher to really make this group fly, and it sounds like you are precisely that. They love trips and active learning, and they are lucky to have you.

Hi Gail,
I have attended the Appalachian State conference as well! I think it’s seven years ago now. In fact, I’m going again this year. App State is just over an hour from my home in the mountains.
You really have taught in different sorts of places. I’m just back from a visit to an international school in Dubai, and it made me interested in…[Read more]

Hello Ellen!
Sometimes, here in the damp and rainy North Carolina mountains, I dream about dry heat!
If I didn’t teach English I would teach history. Most of the books on my shelves deal with history. I especially like the history of private life. What regular people thought and did on a daily basis– what they drank from, how they did their…[Read more]

Hi Kari,
I love North Dakota! My father grew up outside of Ellendale, in Dickey County, and I spent many happy weeks visiting my grandparents on their farm and in town. At a small school, you have to wear many hats– I’m so impressed with all the different subjects you teach and have taught.

Hello All!
My name is Peter Bobbe and I teach English at Mountain Heritage High School in Yancey County, North Carolina. I have lived and taught in this small Appalachian community for twenty-five years; previously I taught in West St. Paul, Minnesota, and at Westtown School in suburban Philadelphia.
I grew up in Moorestown, New Jersey, and…[Read more]
