“Writing teachers are not therapists and need to know when to send students who reveal troubling issues for help.” (p.118)
I found this quote kind of ironic, because much of the writing done by both the students and Sondra was therapeutic. I know that she is referring to the fact that if students write about something that leads us to believe…[Read more]

I found myself reflecting a lot on faith as well. Asking questions about faith is something that can definitely feel threatening for some, but I do believe, as you said so well, it is the way to ‘strengthen and enrich spiritual learning and experiences.” I was raised Catholic, and though my questioning led me to leave the church, I do feel it also…[Read more]

During my first three years at my current school, I taught 6-8 ELA, and 7th grade math. I have historically HATED math, and struggled with it through most of my school career. If one of my middle or high school math teachers heard I was teaching math, they may have fainted from surprise. That said, I think the fact that it did not come easy to me…[Read more]

This is such an interesting observation!
I find that I have to keep in mind – and also remind my students – that we all come from different backgrounds, and families with varying levels of openness and dialogue. Because of their family culture, some of my students are much more comfortable with classroom dialogue than others.

Amy, I really appreciated your comments about being “discouraged from sharing our viewpoints in class given the highly divisive political climate we are in.” I have found myself acting as a moderator between students with differing political views (primarily a reflection of those of their parents), and have been working a lot on fostering…[Read more]

On Austrian Soil Response: I went back and looked at what I highlighted, typed up a number of them, grouped them by theme, and then responded. It is rather disjointed, but was the easiest way for me to collect my thoughts…

Also, did anyone catch this weekend’s episode of ‘This American Life’? “Random Acts of History” is the title, and the first segment, The Miseducation of Castlemont High, is pretty thought-provoking. I highly recommend listening if you have the time: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/644/random-acts-of-history
Would love to discuss it with others…[Read more]

So exciting to see another Vermonter! I go to Rutland High School every year for their Speech and Debate Tournament (I co-coach the SBHS team), and have friends who have taught in your school system throughout the years.
I have a little bit of a Utah connection: From 2nd-4th grade, I could see the Great Salt Lake from my backyard on Hill Air…[Read more]

Amy,
Your focus on propaganda made me wonder about having students do a comparison of propaganda from different eras. The strategies probably haven’t changed that much, and I wonder if there would be pieces that it would be difficult to place time-wise because of this. I would love to hear about how you approach it with your students.
Looking…[Read more]

Hi Megan,
I would also love to hear more about your students’ public exhibit installation. Project-based learning is something we have really been focusing on as a school, and the authentic audience element is key.
Looking forward to meeting you in June!
