One of the most intriguing parts of this work was Anna’s role in Sondra’s story.
As a student of Holocaust studies, I find myself drawn to the work of Efraim Zuroff and others who have worked to prosecute (former) Nazis. When I was given the opportunity to ask Mr. Zuroff any question, I asked “Have you ever met a Nazi who was sorry for what…[Read more]

I love reading posts from like-minded teachers (not “purveyors of information”). It reignites the passion that I feel for incorporating social justice, empathy, and dialogue into my curriculum throughout the year even when it becomes difficult to do so. One of the best parts of this book was that Sondra did not remove the raw parts of her story…[Read more]

Originally, I opened this forum to begin a discussion on this idea of “Response-ability” and was overjoyed to find that someone else had already begun the dialogue! As a very reflective person myself, I often struggle with having the right words to say in the exact moment I need them, especially when it puts me (or someone else) in an…[Read more]

I have just finished Chapter 6 and have so many things that I look forward to talking about with my fellow seminar attendees! However, it is Andrea’s letter to Sondra on pg. 117 that struck me as an ELA teacher and where I am at in my journey right now.
Andrea spoke of her concern about her “right” she has “as a teacher to teach with an approach…[Read more]

I absolutely love how you opened up to your students using a storyboard to share your personal story. I teach 7th grade as well, so I may snag this idea to introduce narrative writing to my students while opening myself up to be more of a “human” to my kiddos.
I too highlighted the section on page 48 where Sondra talked about getting her…[Read more]

I find your perspective as a foreign language teacher to be helpful to someone like me who teaches middle school ELA. We are reading this same text with very different lenses. I love that you picked out the line from page 41 that I have underlined as well (where Margret struggles with how Sondra can recognize people as Jewish). However, you talk…[Read more]

Hello Everyone! I live just south of Charlotte, North Carolina in Tega Cay, South Carolina. I have lived her for the last 14 years after growing up in and attending college near Detroit, Michigan. After leaving the snow behind for over a decade, I doubt that I could ever return (though a piece of my heart will always be in Michigan). I am a wife…[Read more]
