So inspiring that I kept reading and reading! I was especially touched by student responses, see for example the student poem on guilt, pp. 154-155. Also not to be overlooked is the student quote on pp. 168-169, “I have been held in the hands of history, stared into the tinted window of suffering, clasped the hand of death, been inspired by heroes, and although humanity haunts me, I believe that hope is never lost.” Both the “Guilt” poem and this quote are powerful statements. It is hard to believe that they come from middle school students. Without a doubt, these genuine student responses are the result of the efforts of dedicated teachers who deeply care and truly want their students to take their learning outside of the classroom and make meaningful differences in their communities.
