Hello,
My name is Jeremy Wayne. I live in St Helens, Oregon, about 25 minutes from downtown Portland. This year I will co-lead the Portland TOLI Regional Seminar with my partner Carrie McCallum. I am a bit nervous and very excited at the same time! Together we have four children, my step-kids. Tacy is 20, attending Southern Oregon University…[Read more] -

Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz has authored two books I really enjoy. Having read different versions of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, I find it compelling to read the “spin-off” versions according to different minority groups.
Roxanne addresses a fundamental issue about how we teach US History in the classroom. To state facts,…[Read more]

Bryce,
I totally agree with the feeling that some of our fellow educators are not present and honest about the difference between their words and actions. For me, the hardest part of that recognition is when that teacher is me. It takes a brave co-worker or an even braver student to point out my flaws with dignity and respect. I did not…[Read more]

I couldn’t find a quote that fit my overall feeling (at least not one as good as Matt quoted). The whole idea of “never again” requires parents to impart lessons to their children about the dangers of group thinking and othering people. It also requires that parents and teachers reveal their own biases and weaknesses when addressing these…[Read more]

Bruce,
I sometimes wonder why we continue to glorify certain wars, like World War II or the Civil War, while looking down on wars like Vietnam. Isn’t it about our failure to communicate that drives us to such lengths that young people around the world must die, while the “adults” or leaders fail to reach compromise and peace.
The Holocaust…[Read more]

As a history teacher, I always find assertive statements that do not fit the common narrative compelling. On page 81, Sondra relays the comments of Horst Schreiber while on a tour of Innsbruck. “For me there is a big difference. It is bad enough to glorify any war. But World War II was a race war. It was a war of extermination. It had…[Read more]

Hello fellow educators,
My name is Jeremy Wayne, and I teach multiple subjects in St Helens, Oregon. Though I have lived most of my life in Oregon, I was born in Kodiak, Alaska and subsequently moved to Virginia City, Nevada. I love cold or hot as long as the humidity is mostly low! I am the “step-dude” to four children ages 19, 17,15, and 12.…[Read more] -
