What an awesome idea! I can’t believe you find the time to do that. However, it is clear that your students are benefiting greatly from your responses.

I still wonder why we are afraid to let our personal lives into the classroom. When I shared some of my journal entries from student teaching with my English education students, it sparked an hour-long discussion. I didn’t realize that something so simple could help all of us learn.

The book helped me to see that the Nazis hated almost everyone (Russians, Americans, Jews, Poles, etc.). When institutional hate starts, it is so hard to turn off. I didn’t realize the Nazis killed so many other groups in large numbers (Poles, Russians). I am still amazed at the humanity of people when they are under duress. Most of the people…[Read more]

Sondra,
As I finished the book, I couldn’t help, but think about your experience. Being bigger than our story is hard to do and I admire the courage it took for you to overcome the stories you had heard. I am really interested in the process you went through to overcome those difficult memories. I would love to share it with my students who…[Read more] -

What a great story! I think your students know that you will honor their sharing, no matter what it is. It sounds like you have created a space of trust. As a teacher, I think that is one of the most important things I can ever do as a teacher.

Jim,
You have some interesting experiences with the Holocaust. I don’t have many, but I am looking forward to learning so much from people like yourself. -

These points are so well stated. I have worked in an alternative high school, where our motto was “you have to be bigger than your story.” Many of our students came from an environment of drug use, alcoholism, abuse, neglect, and other issues. Most of them were not supported in education or learning. Many student would complain when it became…[Read more]

I am fascinated by the journal that Sondra and Margaret share. I have kept a teaching journal for my entire life, but have never shared it. Sharing is the real power of writing. As I read their journey towards understanding one another, I am intrigued by the idea of their writing about the journey. I expect my students to reflect and write…[Read more]

Your points are well made. It is so hard for me to relate to an event that never directly impacted me. I served an LDS mission in Japan from 1985-1987 and felt that all Japanese would hate Americans because of the two atomic bombs. I didn’t know what it was like for those people and honestly, no one really mentioned it. It was only later that…[Read more]

I find myself reflecting on your statement “I try to keep my own personal opinions out of it because I’m afraid I will sway my students”. When I taught in the public schools, I adhered to that. I am LDS, but most of my students didn’t know that because I felt it wasn’t relevant to what I was teaching. Your statement is exactly how I felt. I a…[Read more]

Mary,
I agree with your idea of story telling. Story telling helps us to pass on our morals and values. It also helps us deal with things we can’t figure out in our own lives. As teachers, I think we connect to history like the Holocaust because it perplexes us. I find myself asking “How could this happen?” many times as I read Holocaust…[Read more] -

Greetings from Idaho. I just got back from the Oregon coast on our annual family vacation. I have a wife and six children. I have been a public educator for over twenty years and have recently begun teaching English education courses at BYU-Idaho. I have spent the last 11 years in alternative education as a principal and teacher. I am awed by the…[Read more]

Greetings from Boise, Idaho
I’ve slowly learned that painting with a broad brush does not make for a great painting. As a kid growing up in eastern Idaho I remember some of the generalizations that were heavily tinted with bigotry about people that were different than us. At the time it was too easy to not be offended, than it was to take on…[Read more]
