The introduction reminded me of some important Writing Project practices that I have always loved and benefited from as a learner. Specifically page 3 explains the intensity of the seminar that is “difficult to describe;” that statement made my heart skip a few beats in fond anticipation. I have participated in 2 Writing Project summer seminars…[Read more]

Beautiful comparison, Bridgett. I appreciate the quote you reminded me of from Sondra’s book.

Yes, I truly love personal narratives – they are so powerful. It is too bad and so sad that you were not able to get the stories from your mother, Eileen, but I also understand how hard it can be for people to retell a story that is filled with such pain.

Misty, you have such an interesting heritage! Are you excited to go to Ellis Island, or have you already been there?

I feel like there is a distinct difference between Sondra’s memoir and Nora’s. Sondra is facing a fear of hers as is Nora, but from a much different position. While I admired Sondra’s vulnerability in facing the group of people without faces that she was taught to hate, I found myself being nervous for Nora as she faced down what might very well…[Read more]

Leslie, it is interesting to me how quickly accents return. I was irritated with my late husband while we were on a cruise because every time we talked to this couple we met from New York he would speak like them. I thought it was disrespectful, but he quickly explained that he didn’t even mean to do it. It just happened. He was from north of the…[Read more]

Eduardo, I really appreciate your commentary on identity being a “complex tapestry.” I too believe this book would really speak to all students and is a powerful message about belonging. I think it would start a rich and emotional discussion with my Native American students that move back and forth between the reservation and Great Falls.

This book is INCREDIBLE! I have not finished reading it yet, but I definitely will finish it on my vacation that starts tomorrow. It is a compelling read. I don’t want to write in it as it is so beautiful, but I am keeping notes on sticky notes. I was a bit confused about the Poisonous Mushroom part – did her uncle copy that down? He didn’t write…[Read more]

It is the last week of my school year, and I am reminded that we teachers live in a world where our year begins in August, not January. In 4 short days I will be free of bells that mark when to move, when to speak, when to eat, and when to use the bathroom. I imagine I will relish this freedom at first, but as always happens, I will inevitably…[Read more]

Eileen, thank you for your comments and your commitment to helping your students become better human beings. Your students are indeed blessed to have you. Sondra’s experiences, words, and shared stories are a light in gloomy times.

Thank you, Ashley, I too was inspired by the bravery aspect the first time I read this book. It is a good reminder for me that being vulnerable can pay in dividends – where there is great risk there is also great reward. Sondra’s book helps embolden me to take those risks, and it does seem like the risks are even more risky in today’s society.

Hello Misty! I am very excited to hear more about your travels. I am in awe, and a bit jealous, that you get to teach a Holocaust and Genocide Studies class. The opportunities that you have had to travel and study are incredible. I look forward to learning from you!

A couple years ago I came across a Hello Kitty notebook that I kept as a journal my 6th and start of 7th grade years. I honestly remember throwing it away somewhere around 8th grade because I was embarrassed that someone would read my prayers to God and my inner thoughts on school. My mom must have dug it out of the garbage and put it in my…[Read more]

Thank you, Eric, for your thoughts. I too think that creating a homeplace begins with the classroom teacher, and hopefully there are other teachers in the school that embrace that idea because in reality not every student (or every teacher for that matter) can make a deep connection. We are individuals with different personalities and while I…[Read more]
