Prior to reading this book (which I have not yet finished), I had not really thought about people who were born in Germany after the WWII. I had known and thought about the way the Allies had brought civilians to the camps. I hadn’t thought about a child growing up at the same time as me still thinking about this. It seems obvious that and…[Read more]

Wow! Sounds like a powerful and important conversation you had with your student. How brave and honest of her to tell you how she felt. You raise a good question here, wondering how another student felt. It is interesting how we as educators can ask questions or create activities that might present a personal challenge for students. It reminds me…[Read more]

How cool that one of your students read this in German and connected with you about that!
I agree the that the various modes of images was cool. I wish I knew German so I could have read more of the documents she included in German. I do love seeing original works with the messiness of writing and notes though.

Funny that you both mention how you chose to annotate. I began with sticky notes and a pen, but moved to pencil right in the book. I enjoyed the open space to share my thoughts. Many of my thoughts were also trying to follow the story – in a good curious way. Other annotations were about the journey Nora takes as she learns history at first and…[Read more]

When I first read “On Austrian Soil” a few years ago, I recall being struck by Innsbruck’s “untold history” and what had been suppressed in Austria. Not surprisingly, the details of that cold snowy and windy day as the class toured Innsbruck had stayed with me more than any other part of the book. When I first read this book, I was in the thick of…[Read more]

Hello Paul,
It sounds like you have been quite happy with the move from law to education. It is so wonderful that your students’ passion prompted you to pursue the study and teaching of the Holocaust. Your words about finding a way to fight hatred and prejudice every day resonate with me. I look forward to meeting you in June.

Hello,
Welcome! It is so great to learn that there is a Holocaust education program in Florida (since I hear a lot of discouraging press about some education policies in Florida.) I look forward to meeting in NYC and learning more about your mission to teach about the holocaust.

Hello Mary,
Great to read your updates. Your sons do sound like they are opposites. We have a few things in common – teaching middle school, literacy, being instructional coaches, and teaching Anne Frank. I look forward to connecting in person and having time to talk about our shared interests and experiences.

So much here to respond to. First, I was not a student who worked to her best ability or would do things for teachers (I loved certain teachers and I loved the idea of doing well in school, but I didn’t really make the connection that doing really well was connected to putting in some hard work.) But I have students like this, and I really…[Read more] -

As I read your post, I thought about the experiences you had in your first teaching position. As you noted, “I was surrounded by diversity and became the minority. This was a first for me and I absolutely loved it. I learned so much about myself and how to be an educator that truly celebrates all. It also opened my eyes to racist beliefs…[Read more] -

Momodou,
Your post is eye-opening for me (I admit with some shame). Thank you for writing about it. I have had the privilege of experiencing school as a place of education, intellectual stimulation, and socializing. For you, I see how it was a place of control and colonialization. The SYMBOL sounds demoralizing, and it makes me wonder to what…[Read more] - Load More
